Humboldt Square
San Mateo, California
The City of San Mateo California aquired the site at Humboldt and Third Avenue with the intention of creating a gateway to the downtown district. A public monument with seating and landscaping was developed at the intersection, and the balance of the site was developed with a mix of market rate and affordable housing. Three story townhouses with stoops and porches line the major street frontages, while a new mid-block lane gives access to smaller “cottages” in the center of the block. Board and Batten siding and cedar shingles were utilized to reinforce the historic bungalow and craftsman style character of the neighborhood.
