Carnegie Foundation
Palo Alto, California
The Carnegie Foundation for the advancement of teaching is located on an oak studded hillside above Stanford University. The building houses academic research programs for the foundation as well as its administrative functions. Preservation of the sites extraordinary environmental characteristics was paramount including preserving the existing oak woodland, protecting natural view corridors and migration paths, and minimizing grading and rainwater runoff. Capitalizing on Stanford’s temperate climate, the building makes extensive use of daylighting and natural ventilation. The straightforward and economical use of exposed wood, concrete and steel construction recalls the agricultural heritage of the site.
